A papule is characterized as a small, raised, and palpable lesion on the skin. Typically, papules are usually less than one centimeter in diameter and can be seen in various skin conditions, including acne, eczema, and many others. They are distinguished from other types of skin lesions by their solid, raised nature rather than being flat or fluid-filled. For instance, flat and discolored lesions refer to macules, while large and raised lesions might correspond to nodules or tumors. Similarly, fluid-filled lesions are known as vesicles or cysts. The defining characteristic of a papule being both small and palpable makes it easier to identify and differentiate from other skin lesion types.
